Rome between the lines
Feb 25-28, 2027 | Rome, Italy
What if, instead of simply visiting Rome, we tried to read it?
Through books and films. Through its ancient basilicas and contemporary neighbourhoods. Through art, conversations, food and wine. Through the people who live in Rome and those who are writing in it today.
Imagine discovering Rome through the eyes of Alberto Moravia, Federico Fellini and Paolo Sorrentino – very different storytellers who captured the city’s everyday life, beauty and contradictions.
Rome Between the Lines is a four-day literary retreat for book lovers who want to experience the Eternal City beyond the conventional tourist itinerary.
We will walk, read, look, listen and talk. We will move between the silence of Christian churches and the energy of contemporary Rome, between literature and cinema, contemplation and conversation.
And very often, the conversation will continue around the table with wine.
The idea
It is a small group of people spending four days together in Rome, using literature, art and cinema as ways of reading the city.
We will explore some of Rome’s historical layers, but we are equally interested in the city that exists today: its transformations, contradictions, multicultural identity and contemporary cultural life.
There will be carefully curated walks, conversations about books and films, encounters with people who live and create in Rome, moments of contemplation, Qigong and meditation, art, wine and good food.
Who is this for?
Rome Between the Lines is for people who love books but don’t necessarily want to spend four days sitting in a literary seminar.
It’s for people who enjoy art, books and cinema; who like walking through cities and noticing details; who value interesting conversations but also need personal space.
You don’t need an academic background in literature or art.
You don’t need experience with meditation or Qigong.
You do need curiosity, a willingness to read some of the selected material beforehand, comfortable shoes, and preferably an appetite for Rome.
The group will be deliberately small so that everyone can speak, participate and be heard.
Minimum group size: 5 participants.
The Programme Highlights

25-28 February 2027
The stay
For three nights, our home will be Antico Palazzo Rospigliosi, a historic palazzo in the heart of Rome. It was a home of the noble Rospigliosi family, which gave the world one pope and few cardinals.
Its central location allows us to do most of our explorations on foot and makes it easy to return to the hotel between activities.
Breakfast is included.

Our first meeting
Reading:
The passenger: Rome
Our first evening together is about getting to know each other and beginning to discover the many layers of Rome.
Inspired by The Passenger: Rome, we’ll explore the political, economic and social forces that have shaped and transformed the city throughout the 20th and 21st centuries. We’ll discuss how these changes have influenced Rome’s identity, its neighbourhoods and the everyday lives of its inhabitants.
We’ll also share our first impressions of the city and reflect on the difference between the Rome we imagine and the Rome we encounter.
A relaxed evening of introductions, conversation and a glass of wine – the beginning of our literary journey together.
26, 28 February 2027
Sacred Rome & contemplation
Some parts of the retreat will be deliberately quiet.
We will enter some of Rome’s most spiritually significant Christian spaces.
These visits are not simply about art history.
We will use some of these spaces for observation, contemplation and meditation, experiencing feeling rather than seeing.
No previous meditation experience is needed.
26 February
Art, cinema & Rome
With Michele Bartolini
Watching:
Federico Fellini’s La Dolce Vita
Paolo Sorrentino’s The Great Beauty
How has Rome changed between Fellini’s La Dolce Vita (1960) and Sorrentino’s The Great Beauty (2013)? And how much has remained the same?
Through these two iconic films, we’ll explore Rome as a city of beauty, ambition, excess and loneliness. We’ll discuss the lives of its intellectual and artistic circles, the search for meaning, and the relationship between the Eternal City’s magnificent past and its contemporary identity.
Our conversation may also draw on Gianfranco Calligarich’s novel Last Summer in the City, offering another perspective on Rome, its inhabitants and the experience of belonging — or not belonging — to the city.
An informal cinema discussion in a Roman art gallery, accompanied by an aperitivo. No film expertise required — just curiosity and a willingness to share your impressions.
27 February 2027
Meeting the author
Qigong with the author!
One of the most exclusive parts of our trip will be meeting Rome-based writer Emiliano Reali.
Emiliano is sharing an English translation of one of his bestselling books and has agreed to make the translated text available (to our group only!) before its English publication.
So we will have the unusual opportunity to read the work in advance — and then sit down in Rome with the person who wrote it.
Emiliano practices Qigong for more than 30 years! Emiliano will combine two seemingly different sides of his practice: a Qigong session followed by a conversation about his book, writing and contemporary life.
Details of this encounter are subject to final confirmation.
27 February 2027
Wine tasting
The place – TBC
There will be an organised wine tasting (included in the total price).
We’ll do the book and wine pairing during our trip.
Some of our best discussions may happen after the official programme has finished for the day.
At the same time, lunches and dinners remain flexible and are generally paid individually. You can join the group, choose somewhere else, eat very little, eat extremely well — or occasionally escape from all of us for the evening.
This is a retreat for adults. Freedom is part of the programme.
All days
Food
Lunch? Dinner?
Lunches and dinners are deliberately not included. People eat, drink, and travel in very different ways, and I want to leave room for individual choice.
We’ll have opportunities to eat and drink together, but you will always be free to order exactly what you want, skip a meal, or leave the group for an evening and discover somewhere on your own or with a new friend.
All days
Walking a lot
We’ll walk in the less touristy areas with locals. We will walk through Rome like literary characters and writers.
We’ll relax afterwards in the hotel’s inner courtyard or library, and discuss books and the city over a glass of wine.
Conversations about everyday matters are prohibited! ![]()
Questions?

Otherwise, you can reserve your place directly.
A little confession
I’ve been organising yoga retreats for some time, but the idea of bringing people together through books, art and travel has been close to my heart for years.
Rome Between the Lines is something I’ve wanted to create for a long time. I wanted it to be more than a cultural trip – a few days where people feel comfortable, welcome and free to be themselves. A chance to explore a beautiful city, share ideas and spend time with people who enjoy the same things.
Because making new friends as an adult isn’t always easy. We have our routines, responsibilities and established circles, and sometimes there are simply not enough opportunities to meet people we truly connect with.
My hope is that we will leave Rome with more than memories of beautiful places and interesting books. Perhaps we’ll also leave with new friendships, conversations we’d like to continue, and people we’d genuinely like to see again.
And that, for me, would make this retreat truly special.
